Series: 3 Uncommon Winter Moves That Actually Lower Gas Bills

by | Feb 5, 2026 | Tips & Tricks

We previously posted on 3 ways your customers might lower their water bills. Throughout this 3-part blog series, we’re dropping 9 uncommon cold-weather moves that could actually lower your customers’ water, gas, and electric bills.

Beyond the tried-and-true advice of layering up, sealing off your home, and lowering the thermostat, these less-obvious, high-impact strategies could be effective against Old Man Winter’s chill.

And with most of the country under a deep freeze for the past few weeks, this information is timely and, even better, the solutions don’t require major renovations to a home! All focus on behavior, timing, and smarter system use.

So, now, let’s talk about gas-related solutions.

Gas: Think Cycles, Not Temperature

Did you know that gas bills spike less because of how cold it is and more because of how often systems start and stop?

4. Fewer starts beat lower settings

Most gas units waste fuel during ignition and ramp-up.

Try this: Instead of lowering the thermostat overnight, keep it steady and slightly lower all day.

Why it works:

  • Fewer ignition cycles
  • Less flue heat loss
  • More efficient combustion windows

This method often outperforms aggressive day/night swings. And of all the uncommon advice on this list, this one’s the most common.

5. Close doors, but not the way you think

Closing unused rooms can backfire by increasing pressure imbalance and heat loss through walls.

Instead, only close doors only in rooms with two exterior walls. Leave interior rooms open.

This creates a warmer core zone and reduces gas demand without stressing the system.

6. Use Cooking Heat Strategically

Gas ovens produce usable heat—but only if you trap it.

Try this very uncommon method after baking:

  • Turn the oven off
  • Leave the oven door closed for 10 minutes
  • Then open the oven door

You’re essentially reclaiming heat already paid for, without necessarily triggering the furnace or HVAC.

Our third and final post in this series will be some uncommon advice for electric utility customers. You won’t want to miss it!
